Heathrow House refurbishment, originally designed and built in the early 1960's, with its prominent location on the flight path into Heathrow airport, created a unique design opportunity both for Rolfe Judd Architects and for Focchi. Rolfe Judd have created a series of glass feature screens floating in front of the main elevation. The screens are animated by the introduction of coloured glass and graphics to the blinds, creating a dynamic visual icon. These orthogonal objects provide a visual reference to the entrance pavilion to the rear of the building where the glass screen is repeated as a glass beacon.

The tecnology

Structural Silicone Grid and Panel System Unitised Structural Silicone curtain walling to Feature Bays Alucobond Ventilated Rainscreen Solid silk screen-printed decorative façade to Feature Bays Structural “Bolted” Main Entrance with Revolving Door

The building, on its “T” plan, presents wide glazed areas on each elevation. The spandrel area is limited to the floor slab thickness height in order to achieve the highest possible transparency effect. The curtain walling includes structural silicone bonded glazing in order to obtain a fully glazed appearance from the outside with no external visible aluminium supporting members. The feature façade is on the South elevation, involving alternating “grid and panel” system façade with brise soleil and large projecting “unitised system” bay windows. The building’s winged edges are clad with Alucobond panels creating ventilated façades which enhance the thermal performances of the concrete wall areas. The main entrance area is enriched by a feature canopy supported by steelwork fully clad in silicone glazing on one side and coated reinforced concrete wall on the other.
