Lingotto Exhibition Center
Intelligent shades of light
Turin
The Fiat Lingotto building, designed by Engineer Giacomo Mattè Trucco in 1916, is widely considered a masterpiece of industrial Architecture. The project for refurbishment of the Lingotto and for development of the whole area began in 1985. Consultants were Architect Renzo Piano, co-ordinator of working team, Economist Giuseppe De Rita and Sociologist Roberto Guidicci. The project is exceptional, not only for size (1.500.000 m3, 507 m. long by 80 m. wide) but also for its economic, history and cultural values. The refurbishment will achieve a multipurpose building linked to its original concepts of production, technology and work.Credits

A series of basic components (glazing, light and fittings, partitions and floors) were designed to ensure uniformity irrespective to the project various stages and timings Focchi entrusted In 1987 the initial glazing contract , converting Arch. Renzo Piano’s preliminary studies into a solution utilising aluminium only. Glazing acts as an “intelligent machine” :the external solar controlled curtains are automatically operated by means of a light sensitive gearcase which operates in relation to solar rays intensity. The facades of the Exhibition Centre utilise the structural silicone glazing technology, supported internally by structural aluminium mullion (46 kg/ lm., 12 mt. height ) The connection between the glazing and the structural mullion is provided by special aluminium castings.
