Basajaun

The biobased technologies integrated within the façade system that replace the standard components are the following:

  • Insulation— Mineral or rock wool → Wooden fibers. In the Basajaun façade system, an insulation material of comparable thermal resistance composed of wooden fibers has been selected
  • Frame profile—Aluminum profile → Biocomposite profiles feature a blend of components, primarily composed of a bio-based resin system and basalt fiber reinforcement
  • Membrane and tapes as tightness and wooden plywood as stiffness layers—these technologies replace the conventional aluminum sheets

Designing a circular and innovative wood construction value chains in order to build a sustainable connection between rural and urban area

Project Specs

The main goal of this project is to define a strategy of resource optimization to foster the best use of a specific number of forest hectares that will enable the construction of a medium sized building (16 dwellings with 4 floors which represents a high percentage of the buildings present in Europe). The whole process must be optimized to maximize the consume of wood products from this forest (solid wood, fibers, veneers, bark, sawdust, etc.). Depending on the specie and the European region the mentioned surface will range from 5 to 10 hectares. The objective is that the building is mostly based on products and sub-products from these wooden resources. (H2020_ GA 862597)

Technology

“From digital forest to digital building” this is the project’s concept which wants to assure that the 100% of the wood construction value-chain is correctly exploited by digitalizing the entire chain.
Basajuan is a new wood-based product with the potential of being the pilot and full-scale production of materials and system which will be performed. The scaling-up of production will be in the range of 500 to 2000 m2 for all the elements and hundreds of kilograms in the case of chemical products. These materials and elements will partially take advantage of the use of shavings, dust, chips, and cut-offs produced along the value chain.

The used approach is in the building system which is the evolution of already existing building solutions through the integration of wood-based building materials.
The project collects experiences of Osirys project to make a step further.

Live Project

Testing Activities

Testing activities for manufacturing and normative validation of bio-based façade system modules are conducted to align with product requirements and expected outcomes to collect data and analyze the results achieved. This stage allows the validation of modules against requirements, identifying weaknesses, and implementing improvements. The conducted tests are: Performance test, Acoustic test (IN-OUT), Fire test for both opaque and vision facade modules

Demo building

The demo building is located in Pian-Médoc school, close to the city of Bordeaux. The two-story building hosts three 3 flats for the college’s staff and highlights how forest resources can aid rural areas, be sustainably managed, and help green the construction industry. The biobased Focchi facade has been installed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the designed solution. The residential building is composed of 150 facade modules (650 mq) with opaque and window typologies. This solution offers an alternative to conventional systems bringing sustainability and efficiency to the forefront of construction projects.
