Performance Mock-Up & Validation Testing

To ensure compliance with the project's stringent performance criteria, a full-scale mock-up was subjected to a comprehensive testing regime at the Intertek-ATI laboratory. The validation program included:

  • Air and Water Infiltration: Rigorous testing in accordance with ASTM E283, ASTM E331, and AAMA 501.1.
  • Structural & Seismic Movement: The mock-up successfully endured inter-story drift and seismic movement tests per AAMA 501.7 and AAMA 501.4.

Thermal Performance & Condensation Analysis

A comprehensive thermal analysis was conducted to verify that the façade system met the project's energy performance requirements. Using THERM 7 / WINDOW 7 software, the U-value for each system was confirmed to surpass the specified requirements.

U-value Verification Results

  • WT-1A (Vision):

Achieved U-value: 0.28 Btu/h⋅ft²⋅°F (Project Specification: 0.33 Btu/h⋅ft²°F)

  • WT-1B (Shadow-box):

Achieved U-value: 0.20 Btu/h⋅ft²⋅°F (Project Specification: 0.21 Btu/h⋅ft²°F)

  • WT-2A (Vision panel):

Achieved U-value: 0.19 Btu/h⋅ft²⋅°F (Project Specification: 0.75 Btu/h⋅ft²°F)

A condensation risk analysis was also performed, confirming that the design would prevent condensation under specified winter conditions, ensuring occupant comfort and long-term durability.

Technology

125 West 57th Street

The architectural vision required a variety of complex façade systems for the building's tower and podium, each with unique aesthetic and performance characteristics.

The developer and design team collaborated with Focchi to create an ultra-insulated, floor-to-ceiling glass, triple-glazed, unitized curtainwall system. This innovative and energy efficient panel design enabled the developer to attain a zoning bonus through meeting the requirements of NYC’s Zone Green Program

Tower Façade Systems (WT-1 & WT-2)

The tower is clad in a custom unitized curtain wall system featuring advanced interlocking profiles for superior structural and weather performance.

Glazing: The panels incorporate a high-performance triple-pane IGU composed of heat-strengthened, low- and mid-iron glass with an HP Neutral 50/32 low-e coating for optimal energy efficiency. Shadow-box units utilize a double-pane IGU.

Finishes: A dynamic color scheme was achieved with multiple high-performance coatings. Interior frames feature a custom Pewter color (AAMA 2604), while exterior edge trims are finished in a Beige Metallic (AAMA 2605).

The project of 125 West 57th Street is a new 26-story commercial building rising along Billionaires’ Row in Midtown, Manhattan. Designed by FXCollaborative and developed by Alchemy-ABR Investment Partners and Cain International, the 440-foot-tall structure spans 260,000 square feet and yield 185,000 square feet of Class A office space, and 7,000 square feet of retail space. The building also features a brand-new home for the historic Calvary Baptist Church. Having occupied the site since 1883, the church is seamlessly integrated into the development, preserving its long-standing presence in the community.

Leading Builders Group is the general contractor for the property, which is located on a lot between Sixth and Seventh Avenues.

The façade is primarily consisting of reflective glass with metallic mullions on the podium and simple black divisions above. The former feature a lively design that incorporates a mix of staggered positioning and some flowing teardrop-shaped geometries. The podium is shown topped with a landscaped terrace, followed by mechanical levels as indicated by the presence of ventilation grilles. The main entrance is located at the western corner of the property along with a canopy that extends over the sidewalk and a double-height atrium with the number 125 boldly displayed behind transparent glass. New tree-lined sidewalks surround the retail frontage immediately adjacent, and the opposite end of the first level, has the entrance to the Calvary Baptist Church. This is noted by a cross over the front doors and a tiered void cut into the massing of the lower floors.
