SYSTEMS

Flat unitised structurally silicone glazed system with projecting aluminium elements (red die anodising)

Vertical anodised aluminium fins

Toggle system with reinforced steel mullions

North and South Elevations

The building envelope features prefabricated unitised curtain wall consisting of glass and two panels orthogonally oriented to each other.
These panels in aluminium sheets are characterised by their finishing and inclination. Inclination is expressed by the intersection of the surface of the oriented panels while the finishing is obtained through the bespoke red coloured anodization of 245 Hammersmith Road.
Anodization combined to the different inclinations make the building pattern iridescent but well defined, giving the whole building a feeling of depth.
The interior of the main elevations features recessed vertical glass panels, consisting of a unitised system with variable depths based on their exposure. These panels are connected three-dimensionally to the external pattern of the facade through silver anodized aluminium sheets.
The considerable size of the prefabricated units was the most challenging part of the project. From the 3m width x 3.8m height of the typical units, up to 4.3m wide x 4.7m height of the most imposing, reaching a weight about 1200Kg.

245 Hammersmith Road (formerly Bechtel House) creates a prominent architectural addition and sequence of new public spaces in the area’s Business Improvement District (BID).

Rather than being a single structure like the former Bechtel House on the site, its design reduces the mass of the development by forming the building from two parallel wings that are connected by a central core, which houses circulation space and services.

The external envelope of the development is characterised by the use of angled anodised aluminium window surrounds, which have been specified to create a dialogue with the architectural language of the adjacent Conservation Area where terracotta brick is commonplace. The angled aluminium panels in the façades are tailored to their orientation, minimising solar gain and providing dynamic elevations which respond to the changing levels of light during the day.
